RECIPE TO MAKE POETRY WITH CHILDREN!!

Poetry is soul´s language. Poetry is a form of expression.

It is difficult to teach children poetry if you have not found the poet in yourself. You have  be  able to experience your environment in a sensory way.
Our main aim as a teacher is to make creativing poetry a sensory experience for children. It can be an expression of laughter and fun.

Teaching children to write poetry allows them to observe and feel all their senses. With this method they can improve their imagination, expression, creativity, let fly their emotions, have more rhythm...

To make funny poetry here you will find differents "recipes" to do it:

1. Read poetry to children and encourage them to do it. We must show that poetry can be funny, sad, silly or crazy.

2. Entertain children with rhymes and rhythm games. Nursery rhymes are often the first poems that people learn.Teach small children doing rhythmic structures with claps and set the pace with their foot while reading the poem, it is noisy but effective. A good example is to use with a kaiku poem.

3. Look around you a lot of ideas. Children often complain that they do not know what to write. Teach them to make a list of their three favorite things, and then show them how to write poems about them. Another idea its to ask volunteers that suggest a new topic for poems every day.

4. Show to the students figures of speech with similes and show them similes in poems. Provides examples of them when comparing two objects while using "like" or "as." Children probably need some indication at the beginning to write their own similes. Choose two objects that they can compare.

5. Put music to the students and listen with them. Children understand poetry when they realize that the lyrics are like poems with music.

Poetry is perhaps the most creative genre in which a child can learn to express his boundless imagination.

THEATRE!!

In one of our seminar in class with Raquel we had to do an activity related with the theatre. She gave us some sentences and we had to read it with an adequate entonation and good expressiveness. Each activity involved repeated reading of the sentence. It was very difficult to do it but then we did really well.

I think to put in practise this kind of exercises with children its very useful in order to increase students reading fluency, particularly their reading entonation and expression. A good practise of it its good to improve reading fluency and overall reading achivement.

In these activities the aims are focus on the process not in the production because its important students dont memorize lines. They have to think about the meaning of the script and think on their reading.

First they have to understand the character they have and then I think is important to put emphasis on the interpretation with and appropiate intonation. This process of reading must be done several times in front of the rest of the class in order to feel themselves more centain and comfortable doing it.

We have to prepare these activities in a good enviroment because most of the time they can tend to stand very shy and nervous.
The thing is to having fun and enjoying with the theatre!!

PUPPETS!!!

Few methodological resources are so attractive and useful for the foreign language class in Primary as puppets. Puppets are both entertaining and attractive.
Puppets are children´s toys that are not old-fashioned. Children have used through generations as a toy to have a fun time making up stories and creating situations.
Puppets tend to like all children because they can create different characters and their stories can represent adventures, magical stories or different situations.
In addition, play with puppets, is not only entertaining, it is also educational.
Fundamentally these materials are useful to assume the role of characters that are not present in the classroom, for example, be a man if the teacher is a woman, a familiar, a foreign visitor, a pet or a special friend to all students.

Teacher needs to overact using all kinds of expressive and body-language resources, always with the purpose of catching the attention and encourage the imagination of students.

ADVANTAGES OF USING PUPPETS IN THE CLASSROOM.
  1. Develop creativity and imagination of children. They can be used to create their own stories. Children will decide what puppets say or what actions represent with them. This activity invites to imagination can fly.
  2. Puppets promote empathy. Children have to take the side of one of the characters and helps throughout the story. This helps children learn to put themselves in someone else´s place and to appreciate the feelings that some actions can produce.
  3. They increase the attention. Puppets stimulate the child´s concentration because child has to be attentive to create the characters and to imagine the stories. They help the child to remain doing the same activity for a specific time.
  4. Children learning through play and increase their vocabulary while they work the vocabulary and memory. Also puppets stimulate the child´s comprehension because they have to interact with the characters.
  5. Puppets educate in values. Traditional stories represented with puppets spoke of values such as tolerance, kindness or generosity. This stories usually transmit a possitive message to children.
  6. Toys are simple to create by the child and they are available to all children.

For all these reasons, puppets are a very good educational element. They are not only a resource for leisure time also they transmit moral values to children.

Pleasure of reading!!

It is very important to give advantages for pleasure of reading from the first years of life. In this task is essential the permanent work from the school and teachers.

As a future teachers, we must develop specific innovative strategies to encourage reading with the aim to achieve habits on children. We have to know how to transform limitations into possibilities.
Nowadays, there is a deep lack of motivation towards lecture in children because of reasons, among others, as a:

- Excess school and extracurricular tasks obligations.
- Inadequacy of books to readers.
- Absence of reader encouragements in the family.

The idea of encouraging the reading habits and enjoying with books can try to develop with different innovative strategies. One of them is to mix reading with ITC resources. In that way it is possible to develop reading activity in two cognitive ways: social and individual.
It is important to encourage reading from entertainment, without putting pressure on the students in development of curricular activities with the use of paper and pencil. We get children dont feel reading like a more homework.

We can propose various ICT tasks with the intention to facilitate the reading competence of a book:

1. Comments about the book on a blog. Each student can create a blog. Then, they can advertise a summary and a personal opinion of the book in their blogs.

2. Reading in a digital media using an eReader or if they want to read a PDF documents, they can use Adobe Reader program.

3. Send and receive tweets. We can organize an activity in which they can exchange different points of view about a topic in a school social network. Like this, we encourage our students to read, they contrast ideas and provide opinions and we promote the respect about code of conduct.

4. Narrations. Students can use tools like Power Point or Prezi in order to elaborate slides which they will summarize the content of the book. The fact to assemble each slide with videos, titles, animation and/or audio is fun and entertaining for our students.

5. Interactive multimedia activities. We have used a lot of tools along our training degree like Hot potatoes or Jclic. As a future teachers we can develop various activities and interactive digital games around the reading of a book with the aim that student use them to reinforce the book´s contents.
